Billy has finals this week, so we've been sequestered in the house all weekend for the most part. He finally decided to take a short break this afternoon, and we decided we would try to hit the newest store to open in our 'hood.
And it was terrifying.
Babies R Us sounds cute and innocuous. It's not.
It's aisle after aisle of crap that you're not even really sure you need. How the heck are we supposed to know if we need it or if its just something some savvy marketer like me has made you believe you need. And then when you find something you're pretty sure you do need, there are like 90,082 subtly different versions of it.
I mean, really, won't Squirt be okay with a crib, a stroller, car seat and some diapers?

Squirt totally doesn't need much... Wyatt didn't even need a crib until he was 3 months... he loved to snuggle with us. But John didn't sleep so good with fear of rolling over on Wyatt. ;-) We pretty much still only have a crib, stroller, carseat and diapers... OH you may need some wipes!!!!!
Yeah, we didn't use a crib for awhile either. And don't forget baby monitors, you need those!
I didn't do the baby monitors... I just started leaking any time the baby cried (yes another thing no one tells you) so even if I didn't hear the baby, I knew I had to get up!
haha, the joys of expecting your first offspring. :) there's a ton of advice, and it all depends on what you're plans are, and you won't be sure of your plans until you are there, knocking on that door. My best advice is to put all the fancy and expensive stuff on your registry with a few essentials. And then keep it all in the box with the gift receipt. If you need it, great it's there. If you don't, then wait for the next baby or return it if the time as passed for it or regift it. Pretty much, you can count on using anything if you have more than one child. :) If you do get a monitor, get a video one. I finally have one and love it! I couldn't talk hubby into buying me one with the first two pregnancies; instead he got the basic ones and each set broke with the first fall to the floor (the clip-ons are so strong). :) our brand is Astak. I've also heard Summer is good.
now that you're on the Mainland, it's a whole lot easier to get things quickly, so don't feel like you have to buy everything now.
craigslist is also awesome for those pricey things you're not sure you're going to use--things that you can wash are the only thing I recommend buying second-hand.
see, a ton of advice from anyone who has been there, done what you're doing, so be careful what you ask us. :)
wishing you the best in Parenthood!
one of my fave sites was babycenter.com....
I HATE Babies 'R' Us. I've gotten over it a little, but I find it confusing and totally overwhelming. We registered at Target so everytime I bought the baby something, I got myself something.
We have the video monitor and it rocks! We have the Summer brand. We also have the motion monitor (which isn't worth it, but it makes the boy feel better). Little Miss is at the age where she can throw or turn off either (at 1 - she's genius!).
I agree the best thing to do is only buy essentials and keep gift receipts. The only down part of that is that you don't know what you need until you realize you don't have it. Also, it's hard to find time to return stuff or go out and buy. Luckily, we had a ton of hand-me-downs.
Oh, just an FYI, even though it takes months for the baby to be active, start baby proofing at least plugs and such early because it's easier than scrambling later on. Also get a good baby thermometer. We use ours all the time. :)
